„Susan Cooper is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner falls off the grid and another top agent is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global crisis.”
I’ll be honest with you, I had my doubts about this film. I like Melissa McCarthy a lot, but she is always just as funny as the script allows her to. Hu? Ok, I’ll explain. There are some people that are always funny , when set in a comedic environment, no matter how badly it is written. For example I could not imagine Chris O’Dowd being not hilarious in a comedy, no matter the circumstances. I just don’t see that happening with Melissa. Remember Bridesmaids? Not her fault, but she did not save it either.
Anyway, the basic idea for spy seemed pretty generic. It’s the old James Bond Spoof, paired with the old concept of an unlikely hero forced into an uncomfortable position. We have seen loads and loads of those, BUT this flick once again proves that no matter how generic the basic plot for a film appears to be, if everything is done properly, the result will satisfy.
Director/writer Paul Feig delivered some real quality work here and his writing, as delivered by the actors is absolutely hilarious. McCarthy makes for a surprisingly well action comedy hero, Jude Law mocking his own pretty boy image just adds to that, but most surprisingly the funniest person in the whole film is …. Jason Statham. No, that wasn’t a typo. Mocking his own action hero image, Statham is so funny in this film, you have to see it to believe it.
Oh and let’s not forget to mention, that british comedian Miranda Hart plays a supporting role, which caters perfectly to the comedic style we all know and love her for.
…. last but nit least. It would be a sin to not mention, that Peter Serafinowicz also plays a small role and of course he’s hilarious. If you don’t know who Peter Serafinowicz ist … well, you should. He is only the single most naturally funny person on the planet. don’t believe me? Check something out that he’s in. Anything. You’ll see.
Spy is definitively one of the funniest films this year, so far.
