2007, you might ask? yes, 2007! and also yes, to my knowledge this baby is only available at blockbusters online and possibly a local streaming service for your country, if you are not in the US . there is still no retail bluray, there is still no retail DVD. „then why should i bother“ you might ask. well, because this might be the best horror film experience that you don’t yet know about. even as a doubter of this genre, i was lucky enough to see this film and it was terrorizing. i am not very easily shocked, not very easily offended, not very easily impressed, hey, i am not even that empathetic, but if you have any human empathy left in your body, then this one will hit you. HARD.
now, for all the straight up gore hounds that just read this, i gotta warn you: this is not for you. move along. while it is still pretty brutal on graphic level, that’s not why it is so brutal. you have seen much worse. this is not august underground or all night long or something like that. well, ok, some parts even go into that area, but not in the amount of detail, that you guys prefer. this is brutal and even worse BITTER for other reasons and on a completely different level. yeah, call me a tease, but i don’t go into detail for a reason. you don’t want me to spoil anything, because surprise is a huge element in this film. not jump scares, you will know what i mean, once you check it out.
also, if you got scared during Blair Witch, rec or even supernatural activities, then you should most likely not watch this and if you do, you should consider some supervision by a friend or at least have the phone number for a psychiatric emergency hotline, somewhere nearby the sofa.
so, what is it about? plain and simple: it is about a serial killer. a brutal, intelligent, egomaniac serial killer. imagine him like the zodiac killer combined with some of the most sadistic serial killers that you have ever heard off. he is obsessed with what he does and he wants everybody to know about it. especially the police.
the whole story gets told in the „fake documentary“ form with all sorts of different footage. police press conferences, local news recordings, 911 audio recordings, cell phone footage etc etc etc etc. the director has tried his hardest to make this look like a real documentary as humanly possible. if you are a film buff then you will most likely know about the „zombie holocaust“ incident. if not, just in short form: „zombie holocaust“ is a fake documentary movie that when it came out, was so convincing, that the director was put to trial and he had to prove that the people involved were still alive and that it was indeed fake. now, that movie and the Poughkeepsie tapes only have one single thing in common: they are equally convincing. you might have read chapter one of this segment, so you know how i feel about this stuff in general, but i swear when i watched the Poughkeepsie tapes, at one certain point it became so convincing, because of the diversity of footage and the quality of the film, that i had to google, if not at least the basic story was real and that at least some footage was taken from reality. it was simply THAT good.
now, back to the mood of the film: it is dead serious. there is no intention to make anything humorous, no intention to make you feel anything but terrified for a single moment in the film. the atmosphere and the events could not be better described than „bitter“. i use that term, because in some way it is much worse than terrifying. you will know what i mean. 😉
bottom line: even though i am doubtful in regards of this particular genre, this is for sure one of my top 5 horror films of all times.
